Super Falcons Launch Title Defense Against Malawi

The Super Falcons of Nigeria, the defending champions, commence their title defense in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations against debutants Malawi at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat on Tuesday. Coach Justin Madugu stated that the team's ultimate goal is to win every match in the tournament.

Nigeria enters the competition in strong form, having won eight of their last nine matches, including a 2-1 victory over Tanzania in their final preparation game. The Super Falcons aim for a record-extending 11th continental title after winning the previous edition against Morocco.

Malawi, making their first appearance in the tournament, has struggled recently, losing five of their last six matches. Nigeria may be without defender Ashleigh Plumptre due to injury but has a strong squad led by Ajibade and Okoronkwo.

Off the pitch, Okoronkwo reported a theft of $700 from her wallet, which has led to racist abuse directed at her on social media. Despite these distractions, the team remains focused on the tournament.
