14 Miners Dead in South Africa Mine Collapse Incident

On Monday night, a mine collapse in South Africa’s North West province resulted in the deaths of at least 14 artisanal miners, with eight others injured. The incident took place near Rustenburg, approximately 130 kilometers northwest of Johannesburg.

Lt. Gen. Arthur Adams, the North West provincial police commissioner, confirmed that rescue operations were ongoing to ascertain if more miners were trapped underground. Specialized equipment and sniffer dogs were deployed for the search.

The miners were reportedly engaged in illegal mining activities when the mine's walls collapsed. Three injured miners were treated and discharged from the hospital but were arrested on suspicion of illegal mining, while five others remained hospitalized under police guard.

Authorities indicated that most of the deceased miners appeared to be nationals from Lesotho. Artisanal miners, known as zama zamas, often work illegally in abandoned mines, facing significant risks due to a lack of safety equipment.

This incident follows a previous illegal mining disaster in late 2024, where over 80 miners died.
