Kwara Billboard Dispute Raises Political Tensions Ahead of 2027

The conflict over campaign billboards in Kwara State has intensified, raising concerns about political interference as the 2027 governorship election approaches. The Kwara State Signage and Advertising Agency (KWASAA) removed a billboard for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Suleiman Bolakale Kawu at the Geri Alimi Underpass, claiming it was due to regulatory non-compliance.

KWASAA stated that the operator, Al-Mubarak Marketing Agency, had outstanding obligations and that payment for advertising space does not equate to approval of non-compliant structures. Al-Mubarak contested this, asserting it had obtained necessary approvals and had managed the facility for years.

The situation escalated with further removals of Kawu's materials at Agaka and Adabata Junction, which KWASAA attributed to infractions, including unauthorized digging for billboard installation. Kawu and the PDP accused the government of using enforcement to limit his campaign visibility, particularly ahead of a significant political event.

Kawu stated, “You may remove a billboard, but you cannot remove an idea whose time has come,” while the PDP urged Governor AbdulRazaq to cease alleged political intimidation.
