NNPP Calls for Justice Accord from INEC Ahead of 2027

On Sunday, Prince Nwaeze Onu, the Deputy National Chairman (South) of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), called for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to sign a separate justice accord ahead of the 2027 general elections. He warned that any peace agreement lacking a commitment to fairness could lead to distrust.

Onu stated that INEC must adhere to the same principles of fairness, transparency, and accountability expected from political parties and candidates who sign peace accords. He argued that it would create a credibility gap if candidates commit to peaceful conduct while INEC remains outside a formal justice agreement.

Onu proposed that INEC officials involved in elections should take formal oaths of fairness and impartiality, depending on their faith, to enhance public confidence. He cautioned that peace without justice would be fragile and that allegations of bias against INEC could lead to post-election violence and political crises, referencing issues from the 2022 and 2023 electoral cycles.
