INEC Commits to Free, Fair Elections in 2027

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reiterated its commitment to delivering free, fair, credible, transparent, and inclusive elections in 2027, as stated by INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan during a meeting with Canadian High Commissioner Pasquale Salvaggio in Abuja. Amupitan highlighted the commission's independence and dedication to democratic integrity, referencing the August 15, 2026, Osun State governorship election as a benchmark for electoral administration.

He noted that 94.5% of polling units opened on time, showcasing effective logistics and technology use. Amupitan emphasized that INEC views the success in Osun as a standard for future elections and is preparing to deploy approximately 1.4 million ad hoc personnel across over 176,000 polling units nationwide for the 2027 elections.

He acknowledged Canada's support in enhancing electoral governance and civic education in Nigeria, indicating a collaborative effort towards building a resilient electoral system.
