SERAP Urges 2027 Presidential Candidates to Disclose Assets

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the 19 presidential candidates announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publish details of their assets and liabilities, including those of their spouses and unmarried children under 18, ahead of the 2027 presidential election. In a statement released on Sunday, signed by SERAP Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organization urged candidates to reject vote-buying and electoral bribery.

The candidates include Bola Tinubu (APC), Atiku Abubakar (ADC), Peter Obi (NDC), and others. SERAP's open letter, dated August 8, 2026, encourages candidates to embrace higher standards of transparency and accountability.

SERAP stated that candidates seeking public office must demonstrate that their financial affairs can withstand public scrutiny. The organization emphasized that Nigerians should choose candidates based on policies and integrity rather than financial inducements, advocating for voluntary pre-election disclosures to enhance public confidence in the electoral process.
