Bandit Attack in Sokoto Leaves 21 Dead, 37 Abducted

On Monday night, a bandit attack in a Sokoto community left 21 people feared dead and 37 abducted. The assault began around 9:00 p.m. and continued until after 3:00 a.m.

Witnesses reported that two homes were burnt, livestock was stolen, and the community was left deserted. As villagers attempted to escape across a river upon hearing of the impending attack, overloaded boats capsized, resulting in about 25 people, primarily women and children, being swept away.

Seven were rescued, while 18 are feared drowned. A resident reported that the bandits confirmed the abduction of 37 individuals when relatives called their phones.

Many victims were taken from nearby farms where they sought refuge. Despite notifying security personnel, no assistance arrived during the attack.

A local vigilante member stated that the bandits entered the village, forcing residents to identify wealthy households. The community has since fled to Sokoto metropolis, fearing for their safety.
