500 Passengers Escape Death in Abuja-Kaduna Train Collision

On Monday, a serious incident occurred on the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor when two trains collided, resulting in injuries to several passengers. The collision happened around 10:30 AM near Asham, as a train traveling from Kaduna to Abuja experienced a technical problem that led to the rear locomotive colliding with a passenger coach.

Passengers reported a sudden jolt that threw them against metal fittings inside the compartment, causing cuts and bruises. Sada Malumfashi described the frightening moment on social media, noting a loud bang and the train stopping abruptly.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed that no fatalities were recorded, and injured passengers were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment. NRC's Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, stated that preliminary findings indicated a mechanical failure in the coupling mechanism of the rear locomotive.

The train, identified as KA2, had departed Rigasa Railway Station and was en route to Idu Railway Station. The National Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) is currently investigating the incident to determine the exact cause and recommend safety measures to prevent recurrence.
