Abia Doctors Halt Strike After Kidnapped Surgeon Freed

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Abia State branch announced the release of Dr. Uch Bonaventur Aguocha, an orthopaedic surgeon who was kidnapped on May 26, 2026.

He regained his freedom on June 2, 2026, after being held captive for nine days. In light of his release, the NMA suspended its earlier threat to embark on an indefinite strike starting June 2, 2026.

The announcement was jointly signed by NMA state chairman Dr. Ezenwa Ezuruik and secretary Dr.

Clement Ifenkorony. The association expressed gratitude to the Abia State government, led by Governor Alex Otti, and the Imo State government, led by Governor Hope Uzodimma, as well as the Department of State Services and Nigeria Police Force for their efforts in securing Dr.

Aguocha's release. The NMA reiterated that the kidnapping of healthcare workers is unacceptable and called for urgent measures to strengthen security for medical personnel.
