Abia to Host 224 Athletes in Two Para-Badminton Championships

Abia State is set to host two Para-Badminton Championships, with 224 athletes from 20 countries participating in the event scheduled for September 30 to October 12, 2025, in Umuahia. The tournament was described as a historic turning point for the sport in the region and has been endorsed by the Badminton World Federation and Badminton Confederation Africa.

The event, organized by the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Abia State Badminton Association, and supported by the Abia State Government and National Sports Commission, aims to showcase inclusivity, athletic excellence, and international cooperation. The Deputy Governor of Abia State highlighted the benefits of hosting the championship, including stimulating tourism, promoting social inclusion, and inspiring young athletes with disabilities to excel on a global stage.

The government has released dedicated funding for the event, including the purchase of specialized mobility buses and maintenance equipment to improve accessibility and set new standards for hosting such events in Africa. Governor Alex Ott.
