ACCI Proposes National Land Audit for Food Security

The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has proposed a national audit and mapping of agricultural land to improve food production, create jobs, and enhance food security in Nigeria. In an open letter dated September 1, 2026, Olasetemi Bode Thompson, Vice President of Agriculture at ACCI, urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to adopt an “Operation No Idle Land” initiative and declare a State of Emergency for Food Production.

Thompson emphasized that the challenge lies not in land availability but in effectively utilizing agricultural potential, supported by finance, infrastructure, technology, security, and market access. The proposed audit should be conducted by the Federal Government in collaboration with state governments to identify underutilized agricultural land.

The ACCI also suggested establishing land banks and agricultural clusters and providing incentives for landowners to engage in productive agricultural activities. Thompson, appointed Vice President of Agriculture in December 2023, believes Nigeria possesses the necessary resources to become a leading agricultural economy but requires a coordinated strategy to realize this potential.
