ADC Critiques Tinubu's $1B Social Protection Fund

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the Federal Government's proposed $1 billion social protection program, asserting it is a response to its presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar's targeted production subsidy plan aimed at alleviating Nigeria's rising cost of living. The ADC's statement, issued by National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi on August 27, questions the government's sudden financial commitment after three years of economic hardship under President Bola Tinubu.

The ADC criticized the government for not providing similar support while Nigerians faced soaring food and transport costs. They argued that the initiative indicates an acknowledgment that the administration's economic policies, including the removal of fuel subsidy, have exacerbated hardship for many.

The ADC also raised concerns about the government's previous social intervention funds and the legitimacy of the reported ₦40,000 "shock-response payment" for families, suggesting it may be a politically motivated vote-buying scheme.
