Nigeria's Glasgow 2026 Performance Marks New Sports Era

Victor Okorie, the AFN Performance Director and Athletes Liaison, declared Nigeria's performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow as the beginning of a new era for the nation's sports development. He emphasized that the achievement should serve as a springboard for greater success at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Okorie, a former Nigerian track and field international who won a silver medal in the men’s 400m hurdles at the 2003 African Games, noted that Team Nigeria's success transcended the number of medals won, especially given the reduced Games programme featuring only 10 sports. Team Nigeria secured 10 gold medals, just two fewer than in previous editions with nearly double the events.

Okorie commended the leadership of the National Sports Commission, specifically Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, for their support and commitment to athlete welfare.

He also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the government's role in reviving Nigerian sports, stating that athletes felt renewed confidence and support.
