AFN Cautions Athletes Against Unfavorable Agreements

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has issued a warning to Nigerian athletes regarding the signing of unfavorable agreements, emphasizing that no deal is irrevocable. AFN President, Chief Tonobok Okowa, stated that the Federation is actively monitoring agreements involving athletes and will intervene if any are deemed harmful to the athletes or Nigeria's interests.

Okowa, who also serves as Senior Vice President of the Confederation of African Athletics, highlighted the importance of athlete welfare. He clarified that the AFN has not engaged with agents for scholarships and urged athletes, especially minors, to seek parental consent before signing agreements.

The AFN advised an athlete to terminate a detrimental agreement with an agent and a school. Additionally, the Federation announced it would not work with Auburn University in the United States as long as coach Ken remains there, citing concerns that he discourages Nigerian athletes from representing their country.

Okowa directed AFN Second Vice President Akuchukwu Aghazu to review an athlete's agreement for legal guidance.
