Africa Urged to Shape Global Digital Policy Standards

Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), stated that Africa must play a significant role in shaping global standards related to artificial intelligence, spectrum management, cybersecurity, and digital governance. He made these remarks on Monday at the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) Conference of Plenipotentiaries held in Abuja.

Maida emphasized that Africa's influence in international digital policy relies on sustained technical participation, coherent positions, and stronger collaboration among member states. He noted that Africa's objective is not to resist global standards but to contribute to the development of standards that reflect African realities.

He mentioned the importance of mobile adoption and digital financial services in shaping decisions on digital identity and connectivity. Additionally, Maida indicated that a preparatory committee would review the ATU's activities from 2023 to 2026 and develop recommendations for the upcoming conference.

Nadungu Gagare, the permanent secretary of the federal ministry of communications, reiterated Nigeria's commitment to supporting the ATU's objectives and advancing regional digital integration.
