Ajayi Crowther University Mourns Linguistics Pioneer Ayo Bamgbose

Ajayi Crowther University, located in Oyo, mourns the passing of Professor Emeritus Ayo Bamgbose, who died on July 25, 2026, at the age of 94. Recognized as Nigeria’s first Professor of Linguistics, Bamgbose was a pivotal figure in shaping linguistic studies in Nigeria and Africa.

The Vice-Chancellor of Ajayi Crowther University, Prof. Ebunoluwa Oduwole, expressed condolences in a letter to Bamgbose’s family and the National President of the St.

Andrews College Old Boys Association, highlighting his monumental influence on generations. Bamgbose's involvement with the university began in 1999, contributing to its transformation from St.

Andrew’s College of Education into a full-fledged university. He served on the Implementation Committee and was part of the inaugural Governing Council from 2005 to 2014.

His legacy includes the establishment of the SACOBA House and National Secretariat at the university, and a street on campus is named in his honor, reflecting his lifelong dedication to education.
