Akwa Ibom State to Convert Waste into Energy Resources

The Akwa Ibom State Government has announced an initiative to convert approximately 700,000 metric tonnes of solid waste generated annually into energy and other economic resources as part of its environmental sustainability efforts under the ARISE 2.0 Strategy. Rt.
Hon. Nsikak Ekong, the Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources, revealed this plan during a ministerial briefing at Akpan Isemin Hall in Uyo. The initiative aims to transform solid waste into electricity, organic fertiliser, and recyclable products, while also creating employment and revenue opportunities.
Consultants from India and the United States have already submitted proposals on how to convert the state’s waste stream into useful products. Effective waste segregation at the source is essential for this plan, with households being profiled for efficient collection and processing.
Ekong also mentioned that the initiative is part of the environmental protection component of the ARISE 2.0 Strategy and that Governor Umo Eno has directed a review of the Uyo Urban Flood Control Master Plan to address flooding issues.
