FG Launches Gas Scheme in Akwa Ibom, Targets 5M Homes

The federal government has initiated the National Grassroots Liquefied Petroleum Gas Penetration Programme (NGLPP) in Akwa Ibom State, marking the second phase of a nationwide rollout aimed at enhancing access to clean cooking energy and increasing domestic gas utilization. The launch was coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources (Gas) and the Decade of Gas Initiative, with Akwa Ibom identified as a strategic hub due to its substantial oil production and natural gas reserves.

Mr. Ed Ubong, the Coordinating Director of the Decade of Gas Initiative, stated that the program aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s agenda to improve access to cleaner energy at the household level. The government aims to reach one million households annually and five million by 2030, increasing national LPG consumption to five million metric tonnes per year.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, emphasized the program's alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on women's empowerment and grassroots prosperity. Ekpo also launched the Rural Women Empowerment Initiative for Entrepreneurship Development, providing N100,000 each to 3,000 women, totaling N300 million in support.
