Trump Renames Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' Amid Trade Tensions

On Thursday, Donald Trump signed an order instructing US federal agencies to rename a portion of Lake Ontario as "Lake America," which will be reflected on government maps, official documents, and databases. However, this directive does not grant the US authority to rename Canada's portion of the lake or compel recognition from Canada, international organizations, or other countries.

The name change occurs amid escalating trade tensions between the US and Canada, following the collapse of trade negotiations and Trump's imposition of a 50 percent tariff on several Canadian imports. Trump criticized Canada for seeking treatment akin to a US state and accused it of exploiting the US through trade, citing a $60 billion trade deficit.

Economists have noted that this deficit is largely due to US imports of Canadian oil. Trump also mentioned potential tariffs on Canadian steel and other products, while Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's government retaliated with tariffs on US goods.

The name change had been under consideration for some time and is effective immediately.
