Anambra Arrests Birth Attendant for Illegal Surgeries

Onyinyechi Charl, a 47-year-old woman, was arrested in Anambra State for allegedly operating as an unlicensed traditional birth attendant and performing unauthorized caesarean section surgeries at her facility in Umueri, Anambra East Local Government Area. The arrest occurred during an inspection by officials from the Anambra State Ministry of Health, led by Dr.

Afam Obidik, who described the illegal maternity facility as disturbing. The inspection team discovered surgical instruments and medical equipment believed to be used for unauthorized procedures, as well as a shrine altar within the premises.

Dr. Obidik emphasized the government's commitment to eliminating unqualified individuals endangering lives and providing healthcare.

The Anambra State government will continue to enforce regulations and prosecute illegal medical practitioners, ensuring that only licensed healthcare professionals provide medical and surgical services. The facility has been sealed, and legal proceedings against Charl are expected to follow.
