Anambra State Launches Plea Bargain Initiative for Justice

The Anambra State Government has launched a plea bargain initiative aimed at decongesting correctional facilities and expediting the justice process. This initiative, announced by Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Tobechukwu Nweke in a statement on Wednesday in Awka, is part of broader reforms under Governor Chukwuma Soludo's agenda.

The plea bargain policy does not apply to defendants charged with murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, and rape. According to a directive dated July 22, 2026, all prosecutors in Anambra State are required to issue prescribed plea bargain forms to defendants in eligible cases before pleas are taken.

The directive emphasizes that any prosecution initiated without issuing the plea bargain form will be deemed improper and may be discontinued. Additionally, all plea bargain agreements must be signed or approved by the head of the legal department of the prosecuting agency or the Attorney General.
