Anambra State Introduces Plea Bargain for Criminal Trials

The Anambra State Government has launched a plea bargain program aimed at suspects standing criminal trial, as announced by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Tobechukwu Nweke (SAN), in a statement on Wednesday in Awka. This initiative is designed to decongest correctional facilities and alleviate the burden on the courts while advancing reforms in the criminal justice system under the administration of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo.

The plea bargain program applies to all offenses under Anambra State laws, with the exception of murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, and rape. Nweke issued a directive on July 22, 2026, instructing state prosecutors to provide plea bargain forms to defendants before their pleas are taken in court, ensuring they are informed of this opportunity early in the proceedings.

The plea bargain allows an accused person who pleads guilty to potentially receive a reduced sentence, subject to court approval, reflecting the government's commitment to improving criminal justice administration while maintaining a firm stance against serious violent crimes.
