Makinde Condemns Attack on Obi's Convoy in Benue

On September 8, 2026, Seyi Makinde, the presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), condemned the blocking of Peter Obi's convoy during Obi's campaign visit to Benue. Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) and former governor, was in Benue to meet families affected by the June 2025 attacks.

His convoy encountered a blockade on the Makurdi-Gboko federal highway, erected by angry youths, which caused significant traffic congestion. The police reportedly did little to clear the road.

In a statement on September 9, issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Digital Communication, Anthony Ehilebo, Makinde's campaign labeled the incident "totally unacceptable" and attributed it to state-sponsored thuggery by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Makinde's team also criticized a suggestion from the Benue State Government that Obi should have sought prior permission for his visit, citing constitutional rights to free movement and peaceful assembly.

Makinde called for a full investigation into the incident.
