Nigerian Army Warns Against MASSOB's Memorial Directive

The Nigerian Army issued a warning against the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) regarding its directive for civil war memorial services scheduled for May 31, 2026. Lt.

Col. Olabisi Ayeni, the Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 82 Division, stated that the directive is illegal and aims to provoke unrest in the region.

While the Army acknowledged the sacrifices made during the Nigerian Civil War and expressed empathy for families who lost loved ones, it emphasized that the federal government already recognizes occasions to honor fallen heroes. The Army reiterated that any public gatherings that could lead to confrontation with security agencies would not be tolerated.

Citizens were advised to stay away from such plans, and the Army assured residents of the Southeast that they could engage in lawful activities without fear of intimidation. The statement also warned that anyone disrupting public peace during religious activities would face legal consequences.
