MASSOB Plans Biafra Anniversary Commemoration for 2026

The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has announced plans to mark the 59th anniversary of Biafra's declaration on May 30, 2026. The group, led by Uchenna Madu, has directed churches across the South East and South South regions to conduct special memorial thanksgiving services on that day.

In a statement by the group's director, Edeson Samuel, the anniversary is described as a significant milestone in the ongoing self-determination struggle. MASSOB has declared a mandatory sit-at-home order on May 30, 2026, urging markets, schools, and public places to remain closed from 6 AM to 4 PM.

The group aims to honor the millions who lost their lives during the Nigerian Biafran Civil War. Additionally, MASSOB has warned its members against public gatherings that could lead to confrontations with security agencies, emphasizing that no physical demonstrations will occur.

The group also called for the immediate release of detained leader Nnamdi Kanu and acknowledged the expected heavy security presence across major cities.
