Ruling House Sues Ogun Governor Over Awujale Selection Delay

The Fusengbuwa Ruling House in Ijebu-Ode has initiated legal action against Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, the Awujale kingmakers, and several other defendants, including Dare Alebiosu, Chairman of Ijebu-Ode Local Government. The lawsuit, filed on August 21, 2026, under suit number HCJ/149/2026, seeks judicial orders to complete the selection process for the next Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland.

The claimants, led by Otunba Abdulateef Adebayo Owoyemi, Chairman of the ruling house, argue that the government unlawfully intervened by locking the Awujale Palace on January 20, 2026, preventing the kingmakers from concluding their selection process. They question the legal authority of the state government to halt the nomination process and assert that the ruling house fulfilled its responsibilities under the Obas and Chiefs Law of Ogun State 2021.

The Awujale stool became vacant following the death of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona on July 13, 2025, after a 65-year reign.
