Bagudu Advocates for Youth in Peacebuilding Efforts

Atiku Bagudu, during a workshop organized by Search Common Ground Nigeria in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development in Abuja, called for a stronger role of youth in peacebuilding. He stressed that young people must understand the drivers of conflict to contribute effectively to sustainable solutions.

Bagudu identified historical grievances, land use disputes, resource competition, and social tensions as common conflict drivers. He urged for inclusivity and collaboration across religious and ethnic lines, noting the crucial role of community leaders in shaping narratives that either promote peace or escalate tensions.

The workshop aimed to support Nigeria's development of a second National Action Plan for Youth, Peace, and Security, building on the groundwork laid by the first plan, which faced challenges in measuring long-term outcomes. Saji Freli, the global director of the Children and Youth Program at Search Common Ground, highlighted the importance of intergenerational collaboration and trust-building to enhance youth agency and impact.
