Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin Resigns Due to Illness

Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned from office on Friday, citing ill health as the reason for his decision, which brings an early end to his five-year tenure. The 76-year-old leader's resignation comes approximately two years before the expiration of his constitutional term, amid increasing political pressure and calls from opposition parties for his resignation.

In a statement, Shahabuddin revealed he had been diagnosed with Autonomic Neuropathy, which has caused episodes of temporary loss of consciousness, significantly affecting his ability to fulfill his presidential duties. His resignation letter was addressed to Speaker of Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, who accepted it in accordance with constitutional provisions.

Following this, the Speaker will perform presidential functions in an acting capacity until a new president is elected within 90 days. Shahabuddin emphasized that his deteriorating health was the sole reason for his resignation, having recently returned from medical treatment in London.
