Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin Resigns

Mohammed Shahabuddin, the President of Bangladesh, resigned from his largely ceremonial position on Friday, citing ill health as the reason for his departure. In a letter addressed to the speaker of parliament, Shahabuddin, 76, stated that his physical and mental incapacity made it impossible for him to fulfill the responsibilities of the presidency.

He confirmed his resignation in a call with AFP, responding to speculation about his plans to step down before his term ended in 2028. Shahabuddin was elected by parliament in 2023 with the backing of Sheikh Hasina's Awami League.

His resignation comes amid political instability following a student revolt that ousted Hasina in 2024, leading to increased calls for his removal. Additionally, Shahabuddin faced allegations of communicating with Hasina while receiving medical treatment in London, which he denied.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed stated that the government was unaware of any resignation submission, emphasizing the constitutional requirement for such a letter.
