Bayelsa Electoral Commission Halts 2027 LG Elections Process

The Bayelsa State Independent Electoral Commission (BYSIEC) has announced the suspension of the electoral process for the upcoming 2027 local government elections in Bayelsa State. This decision includes the suspension of all party primaries related to the elections, pending the resolution of a legal suit filed by the Zenith Labour Party and Accord Party against BYSIEC.

The announcement was made in a public notice issued on Saturday and signed by Augustus Elliot, the Commissioner for Media and Publicity, on behalf of the chairman. The commission stated that the suspension is a direct response to the legal action challenging certain aspects of the electoral process.

Political parties have been directed to halt their primary elections until the outcome of the suit is determined. BYSIEC urged all stakeholders and the public to take note of this development and comply with the directive, which is expected to temporarily disrupt preparations for the local government elections across the eight local government areas of Bayelsa State.
