Umahi Criticizes BAECC Over Benin-Asaba Highway Issues

During an on-the-spot assessment on Tuesday, Minister of Works David Umahi criticized the Benin-Asaba Expressway Concession Company (BAECC) for its poor management of the Benin-Asaba highway. Umahi accused the concessionaire of lacking the necessary technical competence to execute the project, particularly highlighting the removal of existing asphalt without constructing adequate side drains, which contributed to the road's deterioration.

The highway, concessioned to BAECC in 2025 for transformation into a 10-lane expressway, has faced complaints from motorists stranded due to its condition. Umahi stated that the Ministry of Works had not authorized the asphalt removal and directed officials to take action against such practices.

He expressed disappointment with the concessionaire and suggested they could face arrest for damaging public property. In response, BAECC CEO Samuel Daramola attributed the slow progress to heavy rainfall and traffic, asserting the company's commitment to completing the project.

Governor Monday Okpebholo also acknowledged federal intervention in state roads.
