Lagos Hosts National Intermediate Games to Combat Age Cheating

Lagos State will host the inaugural National Intermediate Games from October 1 to 15, 2026, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. This initiative aims to address the issues of age cheating and the "win-at-all-cost" mentality in Nigerian youth sports.

The National Sports Commission, through the Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy, has created a competitive platform for athletes aged 15 to 18, bridging the gap between under-15 championships and senior-level competitions. This age group is critical for athlete development, and the Lagos State Government is committed to ethical practices.

At a media briefing at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, local leaders announced the implementation of advanced digital screening methods to prevent identity fraud, moving away from traditional physical screenings. The Local Organising Committee, co-chaired by Lekan Fatodu and Mobolaji Ogunlende, has partnered with the National Identity Management Commission to ensure the integrity of the competition.
