NLC Shuts AEDC Offices Over Dismissal of 900 Workers

On Wednesday, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) initiated a shutdown of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) offices across Abuja, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Niger State in response to the dismissal of over 900 workers. The NLC, led by its president Ajaero, described the mass layoffs as unjust and claimed that due process was not followed, violating earlier agreements with management.

The dispute has been ongoing for six months, with management allegedly misleading union leaders about the workers' retirement status. The NLC issued a 48-hour ultimatum for the management to resolve the dispute, warning that failure to meet their demands could lead to significant disruptions in electricity supply across the Federal Capital Territory and surrounding states.

Ajaero expressed concerns about the potential for a blackout if the situation is not urgently addressed. As of the time of reporting, there was no official response from AEDC regarding the union's actions.
