NLC Shuts AEDC Abuja Office Over 900 Worker Dismissals

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has closed the Abuja office of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) in response to the company's termination of 900 workers. NLC President Joe Ajaero issued a 48-hour ultimatum for AEDC management to resolve the crisis, warning of a total shutdown of operations across major offices if no action is taken.

Ajaero accused AEDC of conducting mass layoffs under false pretenses, describing the situation as a significant deceit that endangers Nigeria's already troubled power sector. He highlighted that the layoffs, which were claimed to affect workers nearing retirement, actually targeted younger employees who had only served for two to three years.

Despite AEDC's promise to revisit the layoffs in six months, no action has been taken, leading to the union's intervention based on their findings.
