El-Rufai Sues ICPC for N1 Billion Over Search Warrant

Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, has initiated a fundamental rights enforcement suit against the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), demanding N1 billion in damages. The suit, filed on February 20, 2023, challenges the legality of a search warrant executed on February 19, 2023, at his residence located at 12 Mambilla Street, Aso Drive, Abuja.

El-Rufai's legal team, led by Oluwol Iyamu, argues that the search warrant was invalid due to several defects, including lack of specificity, typographical errors, and absence of probable cause, constituting an unlawful and unreasonable search that violated his constitutional rights. He seeks seven reliefs, including the return of seized items, a declaration of the search warrant as null and void, and N1 billion in damages for psychological trauma and reputational harm.

The suit is marked FHC/ABJ/CS/345/2023 and names the ICPC and the Attorney General of the Federation among the respondents.
