Supreme Court Nullifies PDP Convention in Split Decision

On Thursday, the Supreme Court delivered a split judgment of 3-2 affirming the Court of Appeal's decision that nullified the People's Democratic Party (PDP) convention held in Ibadan. Justice Stephen Adah, who delivered the majority judgment, stated that the PDP's actions constituted blatant disobedience of a valid court order.

The Federal High Court had previously directed the PDP to halt its convention until it made available nomination forms, which the party failed to comply with. The apex court dismissed the appeal, emphasizing that disobedience of a court order cannot be heard in court.

Justice Haruna Tsammani, who agreed with the majority judgment, noted that the trial court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the matter. The ruling voided the convention that took place on November 15-16, which produced a leadership led by Tanimu Turaki.

The judgment serves as a warning against disregarding court orders.
