PDP Appoints Kabiru Turaki as Interim Chairman Amid Crisis

The People's Democratic Party (PDP) has appointed Kabiru Turaki as the interim chairman of its National Working Committee (NWC). This decision was announced by the faction loyal to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde during a meeting of the party's 103rd National Executive Committee (NEC) held in Abuja.

Turaki, a senior advocate of Nigeria and former Minister of Special Duties, will lead a 13-member interim team to steer the party's affairs. This move follows a significant judicial setback for the faction, as the Supreme Court had nullified the results of the national convention held in Ibadan last November, which had initiated Turaki's emergence as the substantive national chairman.

The court's ruling effectively stripped the national office of its legal recognition. In response to this verdict, the Makinde-led faction invoked Section 31 of the PDP constitution to secure the signatures of two-thirds of NEC members, facilitating the establishment of the interim committee.

The meeting commenced at 2:00 PM on Monday and included several high-profile stakeholders, including state governors and members of the national assembly caucus.
