Experts Dispel Breastfeeding Myths During World Breastfeeding Week

During the flag-off of the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week in Bauchi, health experts, including Dr Rilwanu Mohammed, Executive Chairman of the Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Board, warned against the misconception that breastfeeding leads to breast sagging. Dr Mohammed stated that breast sagging is a natural process associated with aging, regardless of breastfeeding.

He emphasized the importance of exclusive breastfeeding to protect children from malnutrition and preventable diseases. Dr Nuzhat Rafique, Chief of the UNICEF Bauchi Field Office, described breastfeeding as a life-saving practice and highlighted the theme of this year's World Breastfeeding Week: "Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works." She commended the Bauchi State Government for approving six months of paid maternity leave and allocating N500 million for the Child Nutrition Fund.

Despite over 90% of mothers in Bauchi breastfeeding, optimal practices remain low, with only 12% of newborns breastfed within the first hour and 26% exclusively breastfed for the first six months.
