Brou to Lead Nigeria at African Fencing Championships

Brou, an 18-year-old Nigerian-American fencer, is set to lead Nigeria at the African Senior Fencing Championships scheduled from May 31 to June 6. Earlier in the year, he made history by becoming the first Nigerian to break into the global top 10 men's sabre junior rankings.

Despite being born and raised in the United States, Brou represents Nigeria and secured the nation's first international fencing medal, a silver, at the 2023 World Tournoi Satellite Cup in Iceland. He will compete in the sabre event alongside compatriot Oluwafolayemi Akinyosoy, who is 21 years old and has previously represented England at the cadet and junior levels.

Akinyosoy aims to excel against Africa's best in Abidjan. Brou continues to build his reputation on the international stage, regularly competing in World Cup events with the goal of qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, aspiring to become Nigeria's first Olympic fencer.

Coach Ibrahim Alogba expressed confidence in the squad's prospects, which includes both local and foreign-based athletes, as they prepare for the 2026 Commonwealth Championship later in the year.
