CAF Declares Morocco Winners of 2025 AFCON After Controversy

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially named Morocco as the winner of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), overturning the original result of the final match held on January 18, where Senegal had claimed a 1-0 victory in Rabat. The decisive goal was scored by Senegalese player Pape Guey during extra time.

However, the match was marred by controversy, including a protest from Senegalese players who briefly walked off the pitch due to a stoppage-time penalty awarded to Morocco. Following an appeal, CAF's appeal board invoked Article 84 of the AFCON regulations, declaring the match forfeit and awarding Morocco a 3-0 victory.

This decision has sparked widespread debate within the football community, with critics arguing it undermines the integrity of the competition. The Senegal Football Federation has rejected the ruling and plans to challenge it in the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

CAF President Patric Motsep defended the decision, emphasizing adherence to regulations and fairness.
