National Stadium in Lagos: A Symbol of Neglect

The National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, built in 1972, has hosted numerous significant sporting events, including the Second All-Africa Games and Nigeria's first African Cup of Nations title in 1980. However, it has fallen into disrepair, becoming a symbol of Nigeria's struggle with infrastructure maintenance.

Newly appointed Sports Ministers often begin their tenures with tours of the stadium, promising rehabilitation plans that ultimately go unfulfilled. Senator John Owan-Enoh, the former Minister of Sports Development, recently inspected the stadium and suggested that the federal government might consider demolishing it to rebuild from scratch.

This proposal, like many before it, has not materialized, leaving the stadium in a deteriorating state. The ongoing neglect reflects a painful cycle of unfulfilled promises and bureaucratic inertia, marking the stadium as a stark reminder of the challenges facing Nigeria's sports infrastructure.
