National Stadium Surulere: A Legacy in Decline

The National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, constructed in 1972, has a rich history of hosting significant sporting events, including the Second All-Africa Games and Nigeria's first African Cup of Nations title in 1980. However, the stadium has fallen into disrepair, becoming a symbol of Nigeria's struggles with infrastructure maintenance.

Newly appointed Nigerian Sports Ministers often begin their tenures with tours of the stadium, promising rehabilitation plans that ultimately go unfulfilled. A recent example is Senator John Owan-Enoh, the former Minister of Sports Development, who, after inspecting the stadium, suggested that the federal government might consider demolishing it to rebuild from scratch.

This proposal, like previous promises, has not materialized, leaving the stadium in a deteriorating state and reflecting a cycle of neglect and bureaucratic inertia.
