Canada Clarifies Travel Document Requirements for Minors

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has published guidance for holders of electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) regarding travel with minors. When arriving at a Canadian port of entry, eTA holders may be required to present a letter from the child's parent or legal guardian authorizing the travel, even if the accompanying adult is a relative.

In cases with more complex family circumstances, additional documents such as adoption papers or custody decrees may be necessary to prove the legal relationship with the child. The IRCC clarifies that carrying these documents is a precautionary measure, and not having them could lead to delays or complications at the border.

Furthermore, the guidance advises travelers who have been formally invited by an individual or company to carry a printed copy of their invitation letter, as border officers may request this document during entry. The IRCC recommends that these documents be readily accessible rather than stored only on mobile devices.
