Enekwechi Named Team Nigeria Captain for 2026 Commonwealth Games

Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has been named the male captain of Team Nigeria for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, which will take place in Glasgow, Scotland. Enekwechi, a 33-year-old shot put star and silver medalist from the 2018 Commonwealth Games, will co-lead the Nigerian team with Folashad Oluwafemilayo, a two-time Olympic champion who serves as the female captain.

The announcement was made by the National Sports Commission (NSC) under the leadership of Director General Bukola Olopade, who emphasized that Enekwechi and Oluwafemilayo were chosen for their strong track records and ability to mentor young athletes. The Nigerian team is expected to depart for a three-week training camp in Aberdeen on July 2, 2026, ahead of the Commonwealth Games starting on July 23, 2026.

Team Nigeria athletes will wear apparel designed by Puma, which will be unveiled on July 1, 2026. The leadership aims to put Nigeria's flag on the global map and renew hope in sports under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's agenda.
