Enekwechi Wins Nigeria's First Commonwealth Gold in Shot Put

Chukwuebuka Enekwechi won the gold medal in shot put at the Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow on Thursday evening. He achieved a championship-winning throw of 21.07 meters, surpassing New Zealand's Tom Walsh, who recorded a throw of 21.03 meters.

England's Scott Lincoln secured the bronze medal with a throw of 20.99 meters. Enekwechi's winning throw came in the fifth round, where he edged Walsh by just four centimeters, marking his outdoor season's best.

This victory is significant as it is Enekwechi's first Commonwealth Games gold medal, achieved in his third tournament, following a silver medal in 2018 and narrowly missing the podium in 2022. He is the first Nigerian man to win the Commonwealth Games shot put title and the first Nigerian male athlete to win gold in any heavy throwing event at the Commonwealth Games.

With this win, Nigeria has accumulated a total of eight gold medals, five silver, and three bronze medals at the Games.
