Nigerian Army Expands with New Divisions and GOCs

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has approved the appointment of General Officers Commanding (GOCs) for newly established divisions of the Nigerian Army, following President Bola Tinubu’s approval for the creation of four additional divisions. This initiative is part of efforts to improve the Army’s operational capacity and response to security challenges.

The new divisions will begin operations after achieving Initial Operational Capability, with plans for Full Operational Capability. The 1 Division in Kaduna will oversee Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States, while the 2 Division in Ibadan will cover Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, and Ondo States.

Other divisions include the 3 Division in Jos, the 5 Division in Makurdi, the 6 Division in Port Harcourt, the 7 Division in Maiduguri, the 8 Division in Sokoto, the newly created 9 Division in Ilorin, and the 10 Division in Jalingo. Major General Yakubu Yahaya has been appointed GOC 9 Division, Major General Chinedu Ralph Nnebeife as GOC 10 Division, and Major General Moses Gara as GOC 5 Division.
