Court Adjourns Suit on Multiple Taxation for Private Schools

On Wednesday, the magistrate court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, adjourned a suit filed by the National Association of Private School Owners (NAP) against the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) concerning allegations of multiple taxation. The court set a new date for April 16, 2026, and emphasized the importance of dialogue to resolve disputes amicably without prolonged litigation.

Counsel for NAP, Alexand N. Ogbo, highlighted the core issue of overlapping tax demands from AMAC and FCTA, which disrupts the operations of private schools.

The association's president, Rukayat Agboola, stated that while private schools recognize the need for regulatory oversight, they seek clarity to avoid confusion and duplication in taxation. The suit challenges the legitimacy of various tax demands, including a controversial child-based tax pegged at five percent of tuition fees per term, warning that non-compliance could affect school accreditation.
