Court Rules Against AMAC's Arrest of Private Vehicles

On February 4, 2026, the Federal Capital Territory High Court delivered a judgment prohibiting the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) from arresting private vehicles not used for commercial purposes. The case was initiated by Salimon Abdulhakeem Abiodun, who filed a suit against AMAC and its chairman.

The court found that AMAC's actions constituted a violation of Abiodun's fundamental rights to own private property. The judgment included an order for AMAC to refrain from arresting Abiodun's vehicle, with chassis number 5TDZA23C75S264195, registered with private plate number KWL 63CE.

Additionally, the court ordered AMAC to refund a total of N120,000 unlawfully collected from Abiodun as mobile advertisement fees and daily yearly ticket fees. The court awarded general damages of N2.5 million in favor of Abiodun, reflecting the oppressive nature of AMAC's actions.
