Bashir Kurfi Remanded Over Hajj Allegations Against Katsina Govt

Bashir Kurfi, a security analyst and lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, was arraigned on Wednesday at a chief magistrate court in Katsina. He faces two counts of defamation and falsehood stemming from remarks made during an interview with Trust TV on June 24, 2026.

Kurfi alleged that the Katsina state government sponsored bandit leaders to perform Hajj in Saudi Arabia. The prosecution argued that his statements were false and malicious, capable of damaging the reputation of the state government and its people.

Kurfi pleaded not guilty to the charges. Following his plea, the prosecution requested that the court remand him in police custody pending the conclusion of investigations, arguing that granting bail could interfere with the probe.

The defense counsel, D. Umar, opposed the application for remand and urged the court to grant Kurfi bail, asserting that he is entitled to liberty while standing trial.

Chief Magistrate Zahra'deen Kofar Soro ordered Kurfi to be remanded in police custody and directed the police to continue their investigation, adjourning the case until July 14, 2026, for further hearing.
