Mike Dean Faces Backlash for "Secret Games" Admission

Mike Dean, a former Premier League referee who officiated 553 games over 22 years before retiring in 2022, has come under fire for admitting to playing “secret games” with fellow officials during matches. In a podcast hosted by Jamie Vardy, Dean disclosed that referees would challenge each other to see how long they could go without blowing the whistle, recalling a time he managed 20 to 25 minutes without stopping play.

He also mentioned a game where referees tested how long they could remain in the center circle while one official performed their duties. These revelations have drawn significant criticism, with former Premier League player Gabriel Agbonlahor labeling Dean a “prat” and stating, “you’re throwing yourself under the bus.” Dean's officiating has faced scrutiny, particularly regarding a controversial incident in a 2022 match involving Cristian Romero's hair pull on Marc Cucurella.
